Jonathan Carter

Recently I was able to conduct an interview with Troy State wide receiver, Jonathan Carter. Jonathan is one of the most explosive receivers in this draft. At 5'11 1/2" and weighing 180-pounds, Carter is blessed with amazing 4.33 speed and a vertical jump of 42 1/2". He earned All Conference honors in 2000 and was a standout at the Blue-Gray game on Christmas Day. In my opinion, his risen more than any other WR in the draft over the past 2 months. Below is some info on Jonathan, followed by our interview.

Name: Jonathan Carter

School: Troy State

Position: WR

Height: 5'11 1/2"

Weight: 180

40 Time: 4.33

Draft Status: 3rd or 4th round projection

My View: Jonathan is one of the most laid back, easy going guys I've ever spoken with. He's got a great attitude and a great future. He's been blessed with exceptional speed and leaping ability. I think if he had played at the Florida State's of the world, he'd easily be a first round draft pick. This kid has the ability to take over at any time. He's a steal in the 3rd or 4th round area. I lok for him to be a starter in the league within the next 2-3 years.

INTERVIEW:

Q: What kind of person will an NFL team be getting when they draft you?

J.C.: They're going to get a very hardworking player who gives 100% on every play. I'm very versatile. I can return kicks or punts, anything. I'm also a winner and I do whatever it takes to help my team win.

Q: What have you heard about your draft status?

J.C.: I've heard I'll probably be a 3rd or 4th rounder.

Q: What are your plans after your football career is over?

J.C.: I want to have some money saved so I can support my family. I also want to go back to school and get my degree in business.

Q: What are your three playing strengths?

J.C.: My three biggest strengths are my speed, my hands, and my willingness to block and block well.

Q: Do you have any weaknesses in your game that you're looking to improve on?

J.C.: I'd like to work on my releases. I'd also like to get stronger in my upper body. There's always room for improvement though.

Q: Are you mentally ready for the NFL?

J.C.: I believe I am. I've been waiting for this opportunity for years and now that it's here, I've prepared myself mentally for what's going to happen. I've always been a mentally tough guy though. I can handle this.

Q: Are you physically ready as well?

J.C.: Yes. I have a nice blend of size and speed and leaping ability that all NFL receivers have. I'm very durable at 180lbs. I think I'll hold up extremely well.

Q: What are you doing to stay focused?

J.C.: I just play Madden 2001 on my Playstation 2 and read the bible. I rely on my mother and Christ for the guidance and strength I need.

Q: Do you feel you've been overlooked by scouts because you played at Troy State?

J.C.: I think I've been overlooked, but that's what happens to all of us who don't play in D-1A. Nobody knew who I was or where I came from until I showed up at the Blue-Gray game. I had a nice game and then everyone knew me. Just last month at the combine, not too many people knew of me, but I proved myself again. If they didn't know me before, they sure do know me now.

Q: What was your experience at the combine like?

J.C.: It was huge. I have never seen anything like it before in my life. We had interviews until midnight, no sleep and then we got poked by all these doctors. By the time physical testing came around, alot of guys were tired. I had a great time though. I met and spoke with the coaches and scouts, so I enjoyed it.

Q: How do you feel you compare with the top receivers in the draft?

J.C.: I think I match up well with any of them. They've all had the benefit of national exposure and playing at big programs. I know that if I were in their shoes, I'd be in the same place.

Q: Can you make an immediate impact in your rookie season?

J.C.: I think so. My abilities to be a receiver and return man on special teams will help me get on the field alot. I'll take advantage of every opportunity I get.

Q: What are your career goals?

J.C.: I want to make a name for myself and be a positive role model for the kids to look up to. I'm just looking at this as an opportunity for me to take care of my mom and be blessed with a solid career.

Q: What teams have shown the most interest in you?

J.C.: The Chiefs, Dolphins, Bucs, Bears, Saints, and Redskins appear to be most interested at this point.

Q: Is there a certain team or teams that you've always wanted to play for?

J.C.: I always liked the Rams and the Cowboys, but everyone liked the Cowboys at one time or another. I don't think the Rams need me. They have good, fast receivers all over the field.

M.G.: Thanks for your time Jonathan! Good Luck at the next level.

J.C.: Thanks Matt! I appreciate it.

I'd like to thank Jonathan for taking the time to speak to me. He's a great guy with a very bright future ahead of him. Good Luck in the NFL Jon!!!
