Rising/Falling

NFL prospects rise and fall like the stock market. Below are the risers and fallers of the 2001 draft.
Updated 4-6-01

Rising:

1. Willie Middlebrooks, CB, Minnesota- Ran a 4.34/40 at recent pro day on an ankle that is still not 100%. Most upside of ANY CB in the draft.

2. Rod Gardner, WR, Clemson- Gardner is benefiting tremendously by his recent workouts and the fact that Koren Robinson is choking week after week.

3. Gary Baxter, CB/FS, Baylor- Baxter has the size and speed to play CB. He's also versatile enough to be a viable FS. Ran a low 4.4/40 at recent workout.

4. Kenyatta Jones, OT, South Florida- A four year starter at LT for the USF Bulls, Jones ran a solid 5.00/40 and is one of the most athletci O-Linemen in this draft. May be a 2nd round pick.

5. Scotty Anderson, WR, Grambling- Simply put, Anderson runs the best routes of any WR in this draft. He's got great hands and is a very intelligent kid. He's been steadily climbing over the past 2 months.

6. Nate Clements, CB, Ohio State- Ran a sub 4.3/40 at pro day, but on a super fast track. Nonetheless, Clements has a tremendous amount of upside and he may be the first CB taken off the board.

7. Chris Chambers, WR, Wisconsin- Chambers re-surfaced as a top WR prospect by posting a 4.27/40 at his recent workout. He's a tremendous athlete who could go as high as Green Bay at #10.

8. DeLawrence Grant, DE, Oregon State- DeLawrence Grant is now rated as my #2 DE. He measured in at 6'3", 273-pounds and ran a sub 4.6/40 for scouts recently. He's now a solid late first round selection.

9. Michael Bennett, RB, Wisconsin- Bennett, who was once falling at a rapid pace, has now risen back into the top 15 overall picks. With deadly speed, Bennett will be a possibility for the 49ers at #9.

10. Hakim Akbar, FS, Washington- Akbar is clearly the #1 FS prospect in this draft. He checked in at 6'0", 211-pounds and ran a solid 4.54/40 and did very well in drills.

Falling:

1. Koren Robinson, WR, North Carolina State- Koren Robinson is choking by the minute. Just yesterday, Robinson ran in the 4.6 range. That coupled with his poor attitude and inconsistent hands, he may be looking at a BIG drop come draft day.

2. Jamar Fletcher, CB, Wisconsin- At 5'8 1/2", 180-pounds, and questionable speed, Fletcher has really taken a dive. It doesn't look like he'll hold up against the bigger NFL receivers. May get late first round consideration, but he looks to be a solid #2.

3. Fred Smoot, CB, Mississippi State- Smoot is another CB that hasn't helped himself of late. He did ONE rep of 225 lbs. and ran an average forty of 4.50. As you can see, Smoot doesn't have the necassary strength to play press coverage, which is hurting his status.

4. Quinton Caver, OLB, Arkansas- Caver has fallen off considerably because of he's been going through agents like there's no tomorrow. The LB is now on his 4th agent in less than 6 weeks. He also went from a late #1 to being a mid second.

5. Shaun Rogers, DT, Texas- Rogers showed up at the combine in a wheelchair and hasn't worked out once because of an injury to his ankle. It's easy to see why he's falling. Scouts have NO numbers on him.

6. Brian Allen, OLB, Florida State- ALlen dissapointed at FSU's recent pro day by running in the 4.7 range when he was thought to be a solid 4.55 guy. He also looked very sluggish in drills.

7. Keith Adams, OLB, Clemson- Keith Adams has been falling since he decided to enter the draft. He did redeem himself somewhat by running a mid 4.5/40, but his attitude and lack of size(5'10", 220) isn't helping him at all.

8. William Peterson, CB, Western Illinois- Peterson may have the worst attitude of any player in this draft. He's a tremendous talent, but he needs to learn how to be humble and carry himself in a professional manner.

9. Ennis Davis, DT, Southern Cal- What can I say about Ennis? This kid has top 10 talent, but he's just lazy. He ran a very dissapointing forty time at his workout and scouts have said he may be an option as a 3rd rounder at best.

10. Dan Alexander, RB/FB, Nebraska- Though Dan is a tremndously gifted player, he has limited blocking experience and his hands are.....HORRIBLE. I don't think he can catch a cold, but you can't overlook his size/speed ratio(5'11", 257, 4.48/40). A solid 4th rounder at this point.
