Sleeper Report

Year after year, NFL scouts comb the country looking at hundreds of pro prospects in preparation for the NFL draft. The teams with the best scouts usually are the ones who can find the 'hidden gems.' Denver has become notorious for finding late round talent. Terrell Davis and Mike Anderson, each who've been 1,000 yard rushers, were drafted in the 6th round. Plenty of NFL talent comes from the second day of the draft. In the weeks ahead, I'll disect this year's crop of 'hidden gems' , dividing them into rounds, beginning with the 4th. This is based on the current draft status of these players. I'll break down each prospect by height, weight, 40 time, and a brief scouting report. Remember these names because they'll be on your favorite teams in a few short weeks.

4th Round Gems

1. Scotty Anderson- WR - Grambling - 6'2", 187, 4.52/40
Scouting Report: Scotty was a two year starter at Grambling and a two time All-SWAC WR. He's got good size at 6'2" and he's a very smart player. He runs very nice, crisp routes, has a nice stride length, makes good body adjustments, has the ability to make the big play, nice leaping ability, and he blocks fairly well down field. He's been overshadowed by the other 'big name' receivers, but Scotty will be a welcomed adition to any team. He needs to add some weight, but with the proper conditioning, he can become a very solid NFL WR. He hold great value in the third or fourth round.

2. Derrick Blaylock- RB - Stephen F. Austin - 5'10", 194, 4.36/40
Scouting Report: Derrick will be used as a situational/third down back in the NFL. He's a threat out of the backfield as both a runner and a receiver. He's got natural athletic ability and excellent ball skills. He's able to get yards after the catch(YAC) and he's a threat to take it the distance everytime the ball is in his hands. He'll also be used on special teams as a kick/punt returner.
Addional Info:
- Derrick ran on SFA's 4x100 meter relay team
- 405lb squat
- 345lb bench
- 36" vertical jump

3. Terrence Carroll- SS - Oregon State - 5'11 3/4", 212, 4.57/40
Scouting Report: Terrence is one of the hardest hitting defensive players in the draft. He's well built and extremely physical. He plays the run aggressively and he's a solid tackler in the open field. He's got solid man/man coverage skills and he's able to cover plenty of ground. He's a tough player who throws his body around for the good of the team. An emotional, yet intelligent player. He'll have to make his mark on special teams, but he's got the work ethic to become a starter down the road.
Additional Info:
- 17 reps of 225lbs
- 34" vertical

4. Jonathan Carter- WR - Troy State - 5'11 1/2", 180, 4.33/40
Scouting Report: Jonathan has risen more over the past two months than any WR in the draft. He's got good height at nearly 6'0", and he demonstrates the speed to seperate from defenders. He runs good routes and he's intelligent enough to make adjustments when necassary. He shows good hands and excellent body control. Although he's only 180 pounds, Jonathan is a very durable player who's he's willing to block down field. He's got outstanding leaping ability, which allows him to get the ball in a crowd. He's a winner and a hard worker who does whatever it takes to help the team. Jon will be used as a third receiver, but he's got starter written all over him. It may take him a couple years, but he will make an impact very early on.

- 11' 2" long jump
- 1st team All-Southland Conference in 2000

5. Ron Edwards- DT/DE - Texas A&M - 6'3", 292, 4.83/40
Scouting Report: Although Ron played exclusively at DT in TAMU's 3-4 defense, he'll be asked to move to DE at the next level. He's a strong, physical player at th point of attack and he shows exceptional balance, even when double teamed. He has an outstanding burst in pursuit and he's got tremendous closing speed. He's agile enough to angle and stunt and shows good flexibility. Ron has nice pass rushing skills, but DE will be a whole new position for him to learn. He's very durable, as shown by his 37 consecutive starts at A&M. He should be able to be a steady contributor. He may be used at both end and tackle, but will ultimately be a DE.
Additional Info:
- 530lb squat
- 430lb bench press
- 374lb power clean
- 33 1/2" vertical

6. Corey Hall- FS - Appalachian State - 6'3", 198, 4.47/40
Scouting Report: Corey was a four year starter at ASU and a two time All-American. He played some CB this past year, but will be a FS at the next level. He's very physical for a man of his slender stature. He's got excellent range and he covers the entire field, he's very fluid and smooth in his hip rotation, has good athletic ability and he plays the run very well. Has the ability to excel at the next level, but must add on the necessary weight to become more of a threat. Plays an intelligent game and reacts well to things in front of him. Corey has all of the necassary skills to be a starter at FS right away.
Additional Info:
- 14 reps of 225lbs
- 36 1/2" vertical jump
- 10' 7" long jump

7. Eric Kelly- CB - Kentucky - 5'11", 200, 4.38/40
Scouting Report: Eric is one of the best athletes in the draft regardless of position. He has a good size/speed combo and is very sleek, smooth looking corner, especially in his man/man coverage. He's got the strength to play press coverage and the speed to run stride for stride with any receiver. He plays the run very well and doesn't shy away from contact. He's got good instincts and excellent closing speed. Should be able to contribute as a nickel back immediately and develop into a starter fairly early in his career.
Additional Info:
- 36" vertical jump
- 10' long jump
- 15 reps of 225lbs

8. Wesley Robertson- OLB - Rutgers - 6'1", 230, 4.46/40
Scouting Report: Wes is a tremendous athlete. His body appears to be sculpted. He's easily one of the strongest and fastest players in the draft. He's blessed with amazing strength, quick feet, and is a very intelligent player. He's got great movement from sideline to sideline and is always around the ball. He's able to drop in coverage and can run with any RB or TE in the league. He's a fierce hitter who loves contact. He shows an excellent burst in pursuit and in blitzing. A very aggressive and solid tackler. He can easily come in a become a starter in the right situation. The fear for most teams is that he may not be here in round four.
Additional Info:
- 32 reps of 225lbs
- 38" vertical jump
- 2nd team All-Big East in 2000

5th Round Gems

1. Eddie Berlin- WR - Northern Iowa - 5'11", 191, 4.44/40
Scouting Report: Berlin is one of the most consistent receivers in the 2001 draft. Considered a possession receiver by most, Berlin showed he has the downfield speed when he busted a 4.44/40 at the combine. He showed in his career at Northern Iowa that he can make the big play. He runs good routes and has excellent hands. He adjusts well to the ball and has outstanding body control. He has the leaping ability to catch the ball in a crowd and has the speed to seperate from defenders. He's a willing blocker which is a big plus. He's very durable and should have very little problems adjusting to the NFL's 16 game schedule. He'll be looked at as a 3rd or 4th receiver and a contributor on special teams.
Additional Info:
- 4 time All Conference selection
- All-American in 2000
- 34 career TD's
- 39 1/2" Vertical

2. Derrick Chambers- DT - Florida - 6'3", 302, 4.95/40
Scouting Report: Derrick's stock is rising more than any other DT at the moment. He was a part-time player at Florida, but he consistently made plays when on the field. He's an extremelystrong and physical player at the point of attack. He shows excellent speed and quickness for a 300+ pound man. He's got a good bull rush and is able to collapse the pocket. He shows good balance and flexibility. By April's draft, you may hear his name called as early as round three. He should be a solid contributor as a rookie.
Additional Info:
- 32 reps of 225lbs.
- 29" Vertical

3. Patrick Chukwurah- OLB - Wyoming - 6'1 1/2", 238, 4.70/40
Scouting Report: Chukwurah leaves Wyoming as the all-time sack leader in school history with 27. He's a very athletic, intelligent, and he possesses good leadership qualities. He has a great blend of speed and power and he loves to hit and hit hard. He shows the ability to drop intp coverage and play man or zone. He's got an excellent burst in pursuit and he's able to finish. He's got good balance and excellent hand strength. He's a very aggressive and a sure tackler. He will be used on special teams alot, but he'l be starting in this league very shortly.
Additional Info:
- 1st team All-MWC
- 24 reps of 225lbs.
- 9', 9", broad jump
- 40" Vertical

4. Derek Homer- RB - Kentucky - 5'8 1/2", 197, 4.50/40
Scouting Report: Homer won't be used much as a runner, but will be heavily used as a receiver out of the backfield. He reminds me alot of Ronnie Harmon. Homer, like Harmon, shows natural receiving skills out of the backfield and he's got excellent ball skills. He can get the yards after the catch(YAC) and displays pretty good quickness in the open field. He's not going to outrun too many defenders, but he will produce. Look for Homer to be used on special teams and as a 3rd down receiver out of the backfield.
Additional Info:
- Over 100 career receptions
- 32 1/2" Vertical
- 9', 5" broad jump

5. Kenyatta Jones- OT - South Florida - 6'3", 308, 4.95/40
Scouting Report: Jones was a four year starter at LT for USF. He will more than likely become the first player ever drafted from the program. His stock is climbing since his impressive perfromance at the combine and now some people think he could go as high as the 3rd round. He shows the mobility and footwork that will allow him to stay at LT at the next level or he can play at LG. he's got a tremendous amount of athletic ability and he's very flexible. He works well in space and is able to pull when needed. He's got good recovery quickness and excellent balance. If Jones went to any other school in Florida, he may have been a 1st or 2nd round pick. He may be one of the biggest steals of the draft.
Additional Info:
- I-AA All-American
- 32" Vertical
- 32 reps of 225lbs.
- 9', 9" broad jump

6. Marlon McCree- SS - Kentucky - 5'11", 197, 4.60/40
Scouting Report: Marlon has been a two year starter at OLB at Kentucky. He's started every game over the past two seasons and has become a very solid SS prospect. He led Kentucky in TFL the past two seasons. He's a very athletic, well-built, physical player who has good man/man cover skills on the TE and he's an excellent blitzer. He plays the run extremely well and he's a great open field tackler. Has all the physical tools to be one of the better safety prospects in this draft. In the right system, he could compete for a starting job immediately.
Additional Info:
- 10 reps of 225lbs.
- 9', 9" broad jump
- 38" Vertical

7. Mario Monds- DT - Cincinnati - 6'3", 342, 5.02/40
Scouting Report: Mario is one of the hardest DT prospects to get a good read on. Prior to the 2000 season, Monds was considered to be a possible top 60 prospect, but his inconsistent play and at times poor attitude has caused him to fall. The potential is there for him to me a dominating DT in the NFL. He's a very strong and athletic tackle who shows a good burst once he's in the backfield. He's got good quickness off the ball and his able to collapse the pocket. He shows balance and flexibility and is able to dominate at times, but must be more consistent.
Additional Info:
- 455lb. bench press
- 1,180lb. leg press
- 29 reps of 225lbs.
- 28 1/2" Vertical

8. Paul Toviessi- DE - Marshall - 6'6", 260, 4.72/40
Scouting Report: Toviessei is a very athletic, quick, and intelligent player. He's shows good movement skills, but is not a very strong player. His best assett is his speed and quickness off the edge. He needs to add some muscle mass so he can hold the LOS against the bigger offensive tackle. Overall, Toviessi is a solid DE prospect. He'll probably be used as a rush end because of his speed. He should be able to contribute as a third down guy, but if he can get stronger, he may be able to start in the future.
Additional Info:
- 10' broad jump
- 33 1/2" Vertical
- 18 reps of 225lbs

6th Round Gems

1. Al Blades- SS - Miami(Fl) - 6'1", 209, 4.66/40
Scouting Report: Blades, who played FS at Miami, will more than likely make the move to SS in the NFL. He's got great leadership qualities and he's a very emotional player. He plays the run extremely well, but his cover skills aren't what they could/should be. He's been a bit injury prone while at Miami, but nonetheless, he did what he had to do to get on the field and play. He's shows good range and he's one of the most hardest hitting defenders in the draft. He's got good instincts and he's a very intelligent, savvy player. He could develop into a starter if he can stay healthy.

2. Terry Bryant- DE - Clemson - 6'3", 285, 4.85/40
Scouting Report: Terry was a three year starter at Clemson and has been a steady performer throughout his career. He's a strong, very physical player who plays the run extremely well. He shows good quickness off the ball, but he needs to improve on his pass rush skills. He uses his hands well and he's able to hold the line against the TE. I don't think Terry will ever become a 'big' sack guy, but he can get 4-6 sacks and with his ability to play the run well, he'll get a hard look.

3. Derek Combs- RB - Ohio State - 6'1", 197, 4.45/40
Scouting Report: Combs has nice speed and quickness and demonstrates homerun ability whenever he touches the ball. He moves well laterally within the hole and he shows he can bounce outside and turn the corner. He's got a nice build, but could use some more muscle mass. He's got good enough hands to make himself a viable third down back. Combs looks to be a career backup, but he does have potential to blossom as a situational player.

4. Shawn Draper- OT - Alabama - 6'4", 294, 5.00/40
Scouting Report: Draper has played both TE and DE while at Bama. He's had only 3 career receptions and all came in 2000. Will make the switch to OT in the NFL because of his size and devestating blocking. He's an excellent blocker who stays low on the run. A very athletic, swift of foot player who brings added value because of his versatility. Nice arm length, good body control and good balance. Plays on his feet and he's mobile enough to work well in space. Very raw at this point, but has the room to grow and become a very solid pro tackle.

5. Onome Ojo- WR - California-Davis - 6'4", 205, 4.60/40
Scouting Report: Onome had a very productive year in 2000 with 33 rec., 865 yards, 11 TD's, and an eye popping 26.2/avg. At 6'4", 205-pounds, Ojo has the size that NFL teams are looking for in a receiver and he shows nice hands. He's a very intelligent young man, who rarely makes a mental error. He runs adequate routes and he needs to get faster in and out of breaks. He does show good body control and the ability to make adjustments to the ball. He's got good transitional skills, which allows him to run after the catch. Ojo is a project, but with his size, ball skills, and intelligence, he'll be scooped up in this area of the draft. Whoever drafts Onome will have to be patient and allow him to develop, but I think it will pay off.

6. David Rivers- QB - Western Carolina - 6'2", 219, 4.75/40
Scouting Report: Rivers, a transfer from Virginia, has become a very solid QB prospect. In 2000, Rivers had impressive numbers with almost 3,000 yards passing, 17 TD's, and 9 INT while completing 59.4% of his throws. He's got nice size and arm strength which are both starting points. His downside is that he has 'nervous feet.' He shows little wasted motion in his delivery and he throws a very catchable ball with good velocity. He is a smart player, so learning a system shouldn't present a problem. Rivers looks to be a nice backup QB in the NFL.

7. Shawn Worthen- DT - Texas Christian - 6'0", 305, 5.13/40
Scouting Report: Shawn has been a steady perfromer at TCU throughout his career. In 2000, he posted 51 tkls., 12TFL, 2.5 sacks, and had a team leading 13 QB hits. He's a stout interior lineman, who's very strong and quick at the point of attack. He shows good quickness off the ball and knows how to get into the backfield and disrupt. He's got excellent leverage and leg drive which allows him to drive the O-Lineman back. He's got a good understanding of the position and hold very good value this late in the draft. He's got potential to have a steady career and could blossom into a starter.

8. Sam Young- CB - Illinois State - 5'11", 180, 4.43/40
Scouting Report: Sam is a two time All-Gateway Conference selection. He's a great tackler for his size and plays well in man/man. He ran a 4.39 for scouts early last week. He shows excellent burst and recovery speed. Very smooth, sleak looking CB with good hip rotation and good ball skills. He plays very well against the run and he's very physical. Shows a good amount of upside potential and that may get him selected in the 6th round area. Needs to work on his technique, but with good professional coaching, he can contribute as a nickel back right away.

7th Round Gems

1. Eric Hall- CB - Albany State - 6'0", 194, 4.35/40
Scouting Report: Hall is a transfer from Georgia where he was consistently the fastest player on the team. He's a very athletic, sleek, and savvy cover man who is strong enough toplay press coverage and fast enough to run stride for stride with any receiver. He plays the run well, has good instincts, and demonstrates good ball skills. He shows a quick burst to close and gas outstanding catch up speed as well. He's a solid tackler who doesn't shy away from contact. He'll be able to contribue as a nickel back and on special team as a return man. Could develop into a starter with more coaching.

2. Jim Jones- OG - Notre Dame - 6'3", 306, 5.05/40
Scouting Report: Jones was a two year starter at OG for the Irish. He demonstrates the height and growth potential, along with good foot quickness and body control. He shows the ability to pull and run with balance and he adjusts well in space while maintaining his blocking position. He's a very intelligent player who will rarely make an error to hurt the team. Jones looks like a solid back up with potential to become a starter later on.

3. Trey Langley- OG - Louisiana State - 6'4", 298, 5.15/40
Scouting Report: Trey was a four year starter for the Tigers, but suffered an ACL injury early in the 2000 campaign. He's been rehabbing in Baton Rouge, and I hear he's doing extremely well. It appears Trey will be ready for training camp. Langley is a very versatile ofensive lineman. So versatile, he can play anywhere along the offensive line and long snap as well. He's ver technically sound in all areas of his game and shows the strength, body control, and foot quickness that is necassary. He pulls wel and his able to work well in space. If not for the injury, Langley would have been a top 5 OG prospect. He will make a team because of his versatility and I feel he will become a starter in the NFL if he can recover and be 100% again. GREAT VALUE.

4. Cleo Lemon- QB - Arkansas State - 6'3", 214, 4.79/40
Scouting Report: Cleo is a guy who possesses all the physical skills to warrant him being drafted, but his inconsistency may keep him from hearing his name called. He had over 1900 yeards passing with 13 TD's in 2000 and a 56% completion percentage. He's got a very good arm and shows the ability to throw the deep ball well. He's got very little wasted motion in his delivery and he throws a nice spiral with good velocity. He's mobile enough to make plays outside of the pocket and that may elevate him into the 7th round. He may benefit from a year on a practice squad or a year in Europe, but he has the tools to be a viable back-up in the NFL.

5. Darnerien McCants- WR - Deleware State - 6'4", 210, 4.52/40
Scouting Report: Darnerien played TE at DSU where he earned 1st team All-American honors at TE over Arthur Love of South Carolina St. In his senior season, Darnerien caught 36 balls for 692 yards and 18 TD's. He's a big, physical target who has good body control and a nose for the endzone. He also blocks well downfield, which will elevate his status overall. Hasn't had the proper coaching, but with his physical tools he can compete for a receiver spot early on. He may have to take a year in Europe to improve his overall game, but will get his shot at the NFL. A very intelligent player who could one day be a starter.

6. Chris Nofoaiga- SS - Idaho - 5'11", 220, 4.52/40
Scouting Report: A college LB for four years at Idaho, Nofoaiga will now make the move to SS at the next level. In 2000, Chris tallied 111 tackles, 7 TFL, 2 sacks, 13 QB hits, and 4 forced fumbles. He's a very athletci, well-built young man who should be able to make a relatively smooth transition to SS. He's very good against the run and he showed the ability to cover man/man in college. He's a very sure tackler and he covers plenty of ground. In my opinion, Nofoaiga has the ability and football intelligence to have a nice, long career as a productive SS in the NFL.

7. Gerald Payne- WR - Harding College - 6'3", 200, 4.55/40
Scouting Report: Gerald is one of the lesser known receiver prospects in this draft. In 2000, Payne posted 63 rec., 1087 yards, and 15 TD's in just nine games. He was also a standout perfromer in the Division II all-star game(Cactus Bowl). At 6'3", 200-pounds and running in the 4.5 range, Gerald possesses the size and speed NFL teams look for in a WR. Throughout his career at Harding, he's demonstrated teh ability to be a big play receiver. He's a very consistent, steady receiver who runs nice routes and understands the position well enough to make adjustments when necassary. He's got the speed to run under the deep ball and make things happen down field. He shows good body control and the leaping ability to catch the ball in a crowd. The one knock on Payne is his lack of upper body strength. With proper conditioning, Payne can become a solid NFL receiver and maybe see some time as a starter.

8. Jimmy Redmond- WR - McNeese State - 6'0", 195, 4.38/40
Scouting Report: Jimmy is a transfer from Ohio State where he was plagued by nagging injuries and fell on the depth chart. His skills weren't utilized well at McNeese, which is the reason not many people know of him. He possesses good size(6'0", 195) and speed(4.38) and he's nice hands. He has the speed to strech the field and make the big play. He's got anice build and has the strength to beat press coverage. He's got great leaping ability and excellent body control which allows him to cach the ball in a crowd and create down field. The one aspect that GM's are questioning is that Jimmy didn't dominate at a lower level like he could have. Most of that has to do with what I mentioned earlier about how he was used. The bottom line on Redmond is that he looks to be a very solid #3 receiver, but will have to make a team as a return specialist to get his shot.

I'll be presenting a new Sleeper Report EVERY WEEK leading up to April's Draft. These articles will focus on sleepers of the NFL Draft.
